The challenge: data migration to Azure to optimize costs

The company, headquartered in Uruguay and employing between 1000 and 5000 people, faced a significant challenge. Their technological infrastructure was housed in a leased data center, and they needed to decommission that service to migrate all servers to the cloud, specifically to Azure.

The client sought a solution that facilitated the migration, optimized costs, and ensured operational continuity. To tackle this challenge, Wezen began with:

• a detailed cost analysis,
• research into data migration options with Azure,
• evaluation of the reuse of existing licenses, and
• estimation of backup and storage costs.

The main challenge of this project lay in the need to migrate seven virtual servers hosted in a third-party data center while maintaining the same network address. These servers were critical to the company’s daily operations, and any disruption could have a considerable impact.

The Process: how was the data migration to Azure carried out? 

We began the project with a thorough assessment of the client’s current infrastructure. We analyzed all servers and evaluated the most suitable options for data migration to Azure.

During this process, we identified that six of the seven servers could be directly migrated to Microsoft’s cloud platform. While the seventh was migrated to a host at another company site.

The implementation was meticulous and well-coordinated. We deployed a migration virtual machine in the client’s local infrastructure and, using the Azure Migrate service, began collecting data from the virtual machines.

Next, we conducted a migration test to ensure all systems functioned correctly in Azure before the final migration. This stage allowed us to identify and resolve any potential issues, minimizing risks during the migration.

The Results: high availability and flexibility

After data migration to Azure, the company began to enjoy benefits such as:

• high availability and flexibility of Azure servers,
• a more stable and cost-effective infrastructure, and
• improved usability and responsiveness of systems.

Moreover, because the planning required interaction between different internal and external areas, we had to anticipate all tasks to avoid problems. Thanks to this work, the migration was completed in 4 hours without deviations, achieving success and ensuring that all servers were operational and accessible from all client sites and locations.”

Additionally, Lasko added: “As a result of the planning, we ensured that this entire process was transparent to end users, guaranteeing the proper functioning of on-prem services/applications that depend on the migrated servers, such as domain authentication and Wi-Fi authentication.”
